Scooter Helmets - Yes - You Should Wear One

A Case For Wearing A bike Helmet When You Ride A Scooter or Moped.

No one ever thinks they are going to be in an accident. Everybody believes that it can't happen to them. You are pushing your luck if you truly believe this. Wearing a helmet either you are on a Harley or a Moped is the Smart thing to do. It is exterior and protecting the part of your body that allows you to make this decision. Your Brain.

Razor Scooters

Much has been written and discussed about wearing helmets and helmet laws. There are strong arguments for and against. Not necessarily smart arguments-just strong. If you go straight through the pros and cons honestly, I don't think you can really make an seminar for not wearing a helmet while driving a motor scooter.

Motor scooters and mopeds are really just small motorcycles. You drive them in traffic and your visibility, compared to a car is low. Strike one. While most drivers on the road try to pay attention, there are so many distractions that anyone riding a moped or moped scooter on the road needs to be very, very aware of themselves and the surrounding cars. Strike two. Cell phones and text messaging have no company taking drivers attention away from the road, but they do. Distracted driving is fast becoming the main conjecture for accidents.

I would never drive my car without a seat belt, so why would I drive my gas scooter without a helmet. It is vast protection for my precious head and brain. God forbid you are ever hit, but if you are, you are protected. Most broken bones can heal, the same can not be said for your brain.

O.K. Just a few more things about helmets. Make sure the helmet you are buying is Dot approved. The department of transportation usually tests helmets for impact  resistance. The hard foam inside of the helmet is the part that will save your head. usually there is a liner over this for comfort. The foam part of the helmet should be in great shape. No cracks, No dents. If it has cracks or dents, return it. It has been compromised. This is the "bumper" of the helmet, if you will. This part of the scooter or moped helmet absorbs the impact, so your head doesn't. Next, make sure your helmet fits properly. Put the helmet on, buckle the chin strap, and try to pull it off by reaching your hand over the top of the helmet and grabbing the back. If the scooter or bike helmet slides, it does not fit you. Try a different size or brand.

A full face helmet will offer you the most protection while riding your moped scooter. It will cut down the wind noise so you will be best able to hear traffic. It will protect your eyes from road crud, and it will protect you face and neck if you were to have an accident.

If you don't want the full face mask, there are modular helmets that cover the head and part of the face. . Some have a half eye shield that flips up and down to protect your eyes.

Finally, there is the "shorty" bike or scooter helmet.  Be faithful here. Some fellowships sell  the shorty as a novelty helmet. You do not want this. You want a Dot stylish shorty. It will protect the area of your head that it covers. There are fullness of shorty moped, scooter, and bike helmets that are Dot approved. Make sure your helmet is.

Make your own decision about either to wear a helmet while riding your gas scooter, galvanic scooter, moped scooter or scooter motorcycle, but remember, it is not a decision you can take back. You don't want to have an accident and then be thinking.."I shoulda...woulda..coulda " . Oh, wait. You might not be "thinking" at all. Sorry to be harsh, but that is reality.

Peace always. Be Safe. Watch For the Other Guy. Wear a Helmet, And Buy Your Friend One Too!
